Introduction to Holy Quran. The holly Book.

the Quran is the holy book for Muslims Allah God sent the angel Gabriel Muslims Gabriel to take the words of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad Muslims aren't allowed to draw Muhammad peace be upon him so here's his name written in Arabic Muhammad was praying all by himself in a cave Jibril spoke to him and said Iqra which means reads Muhammad couldn't read or write so he replied I cannot read again. They aren’t who said read again Muhammad replied I cannot read cheaply grabbed Muhammad and said read in the name of your Lord who has created you from a drop of blood just like that Muhammad found he could recite the words that gibreel had brought him the word Quran means to recite which means to read something out loud Muhammad had many meetings with Jubran throughout his life to get what we have as the Quran today my name is Jason Cohen and I'm currently the Imam of Canterbury mosque what that involves is leading people in prayer simply and being there if anyone eats a tortilla the Quran is respected by Muslims because it is the Word of God

the way a Muslim shows respect is before even touching the Quran you have to perform ablution which is washing specific parts of your body to be pure and you are not allowed to place it on the floor if you are storing it anywhere it has to be in a high position and if there are other books on that shelf then the Quran has to be on top of the books it cannot be under any other books my name is al hahn I'm 18 years old and I'm in my first year of university so this is my room I have the normal things that you would have but I also have other things that are very important to me at my religion the most important things to put on when you hold the Quran if you look at it this box up front if you think about it so this is the back and this is the front unlike any other like English books the reading is also back to front so you read it from the right

to the left and you grow across in this way the Koran is divided into 30 equal sections there are 114 chapters called surahs we may see no chapters by their names the first one being al-fatiha which means the opening and then this is followed on by surah al-baqara which means the cow the longer chapters are at the front and the shorter ones are at mthe back and then each circle that you see is the end of a verse or we call ayah and each chapter has different number of eyes in them different meanings different stories my name is Mohammad Samir Amin everyone calls me Sammy I'm a creative artist focusing mainly on Arabic calligraphy calligraphy comes from the Greek term which means to write beautifully and in Islam calligraphy is understood to be a sacred art because it was first used to write down verses from the Quran it slowly turned into an arm because they believed the Word of God should be portrayed in the most beautiful way possible the Quran was revealed in Arabic because the Prophet was an Arab I love working with Arabic from the Quran you understand the level of spirituality does held within it as Muslims we pray 5 times a day we use the Quran in all of our daily prayers Allah is the Arabic word for God sometimes people don't realize that the Jewish God the Christian God and the

Muslim God is the same God the Quran also mentions was from the Torah and the gospel the Torah being the Jewish holy book and the gospel being Jesus's words and so we share a lot of the same stories and the same prophets there's a verse in the Quran that says lucky

Medina come where Dean which means you have your religion and I have my religion and so Aslam teaches us to be respectful to all people regardless of what they choose to believe today is at Friday in which many Muslims come to attend biggest prayer of the week the reason why the Friday prayer is so busy at the mosque is because God has instructed people to leave whatever they're doing and go to the mosque and the reason for this is because the Friday prayer has a sermon before the actual prayer begins and in this sermon the Imam usually speaks about quotes from the Quran endeavor to understand the interpretation of the surah and it's fine meanings so every week you'll get in a religion booster if you like calligraphy plays another important role in Islam because we're not allowed to draw pictures of God or the Prophet we wouldn't have pictures of them hanging in houses or in mosques rather we use verses from the Quran or sayings of the Prophet to decorate the walls of the mosque so that when a person reads it is praising God Muslims have many holy books the first one we have is the Quran we also have to follow the hadith which are literally the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad sahih bukhari which is one of the most popular hadith books so whatever the Prophet Muhammad said has now been compiled into thousands and thousands of books and any are examples of how the Prophet lived his life so from the different positions he did in prayer to how he used to eat how he used to drink so every small activity that he did has been recorded the Quran is the word of God and the hadith is the saying of the Prophet Muhammad the reason why they were kept separate is because if you compile them both into one book somewhere down the line you're going to get confused with regards to which is the saying of God which is the saying of a man the Quran was first passed on by word of mouth because at this time not many people could read or write Allah gave the words of the Quran to chip reel who gave them to Muhammad Muhammad who teach the words to his wife and his companions they will teach their friends and family and so the words of the Quran spread at the same time the few people who could rights began writin down the fastest on anything they could find such nas palm leaves or bits of parchment when Mohammed died the first leader of Islam who came after him a man called Abu Bakr decided that he would collect all the palm leaves and bits of parchment together and make them into a book so that none of the verses would get lost many other copies were made over the years but the third lead of course man found that not all the copies were the same so he gathered them all in then he asked everyone who had memorized the Quran to come and check the verses and correct any mistakes ever since then every copy of the Quran has been exactly the same when I was studying in the Islamic school a lot of the students they try and memorize the entire Quran the person who has memorized the entire Quran is called a Hafiz half is in Arabic means to protect by memorizing his preserving is looking after because I've memorized the Quran I can walk around and I can read if I'm going to work or if I'm on the train I could sit down and I could just read I think it's a really beautiful way to start your day by reciting a portion of the Quran at the age of about five I started off by learning the Arabic alphabet and that helped me to be able to read the Quran I learned to memorize it because I was never properly taught the translation of the Quran the more I started to memorize and the older I got the more that I realized that I didn't really understand what I was saying I decided to learn the meaning of the Quran I would look online and looking translation books the translations are important for Muslims in today's society because majority of Muslims do not understand or speak Arabic trying to translate certain words from arabic into english can be difficult because there maren't words that can fit the meaning of the Arabic word the original form is Arabic and we keep it this way to keep its true form the way classical Arabic or chronic Arabic is a single sentence can have so many different meanings behind it the Quran isn't an easy book to understand take. Shakespeare for example when you're studying Shakespeare at GCSE is difficult to understand if you don't have someone there explaining each verse 2 we have the commentary book each single verse of the Quran is explained in a great amount of detail there are scholars who have studied for 10 15 years trying to translate single verses there are Muslims in today's society who try to interpret the Quran themselves and this can be devastating for the entire human race you have to understand which verses were revealed for the context of 1400 years ago and which verses apply in today's society I am a feminist I do a lot of activist work and teachings from the Quran don't we do any challenges that I may come across because there are so many people coming from different parts of the country and the world there are some people here who have never come across a Muslim before they all had questions to ask especially things around feminism and Islam to me this is really empowering and I would much rather people ask me questions rather than people coming up with their own ideas of what Islam is the Quran is not only a message for Muslims it's a message for everyone because the Prophet was sent as a messenger to all of mankind it teaches us about humanity living together as one Allah says what a sin will be hublin La Haye Jamie our wallet for a book hold on to the Rope of God and do not become divided you.
